Danley Sound Labs visit... finding new BASS...
Well, I took the 1hr. drive to Danley and wasn't disappointed.
My main goal was to hear the Danley TH-115 in comparison to my powered QSC HPR 181i. They connected an XLR to my QSC via their sound source and a DSP and had the same source feeding their wall of Danley speakers. Based on the song playing and at the volume level, we felt my sub was giving 'slight' cardboard honking sound so we low-passed it at around 90Hz (the HPR's default is 100hz). The same low-pass value was give to the Danley subs. We started off playing their source music at nominal volume levels and I didn't notice much difference except that the TH-115 sounded a little deeper and had more impact, especially at the 30 to 60Hz area.
Mike, suggested I get my own source music so I got my Mac and played some of my music that I DJ with. I started off with some House music and then switched to a rap song with a nice deep and typical genre bass kick "Buy you a drink" - TPain. I wanted to hear the limits of my HPR so keeping the source volume static, I adjusted the gain of the HPR so the clip light flickered but the sound did not distort. Mike then toggled to the TH-115 and it was ALL OVER. I was shocked at how deep and MUCH louder that one 15" box was over my 18" sub. The back dock demo area was vibrating and I could feel a ruffle in my pants leg which is just the kind of kick I want! :p My HPR sounded close to anemic compared to the 115. Both subs were in the same proximity for the comparison but I thought they had 2 115's running. I peered over the back and saw only 1 cable connected. I really couldn't get enough of them going back and forth between the two. I figure it would take at LEAST 3 of my HPR 18's to equal their 1 TH-115. I really wasn't into replacing my powered tops but they showed me some top secret models on the way.
Curious, we compared the TH-Mini to my HPR and surprisingly, the TH-Mini sounded almost on par with my 18. It did not hit quite as low but the overall volume level was about even. Some people probably couldn't tell the difference.
Mike then played all of their models... I was most impressed with the TH-221. That sub is a BEAST! I've never heard a sub hit so deep and so low. It had a totally full and deep sound. THey toggled sine waves between the models and the TH-221 sounded smooth/full/deep all the way down to the 20Hz tones. My 2nd fav was the TH-115.
I'm definitely selling my 2 HPR 18's and getting a TH-115. My only dilemma is whether to get a passive or powered version...
